Raymond Dokpesi Biography

Dokpesi was born on October 25, 1951, in Ibadan, Nigeria. Raymond’s journey began with his early education at Loyola College, Ibadan, followed by his enrollment at Immaculate Conception College (ICC) in Benin City. It was during his time at ICC that he became the pioneer member of the Ozolua Playhouse, a dance and drama group, showcasing his early creative talents.

Raymond Dokpesi’s educational path led him to the University of Benin in Edo State, where he pursued his undergraduate studies in Marine Engineering. He later completed his studies at the University of Gdansk in Poland, where he earned his Doctorate degree in Marine Engineering. In the early 1990s, Nigeria’s media landscape underwent a significant transformation with the issuance of decrees that allowed private broadcasting in the country. Taking advantage of this new opportunity, Dokpesi pioneered the first private television network in Nigeria, Africa Independent Television (AIT). AIT quickly became Africa’s first satellite television station, revolutionizing the media industry in the country. Dokpesi’s entrepreneurial spirit didn’t stop there; he also established the first privately owned radio station in Nigeria, RayPower FM.

AIT, under Dokpesi’s leadership, set a standard for salary structures in the media industry that even the government-owned Nigerian Television Authority emulated. Dokpesi’s media ventures, AIT and RayPower FM, provided platforms for independent journalism and played a crucial role in disseminating information on political and social issues in Nigeria.

Beyond his contributions to the media industry, Dokpesi was also involved in politics. He served as a political campaign manager for notable figures such as Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, Alhaji Adamu Ciroma, and Peter Odili. Additionally, Dokpesi was one of the leaders of the South-South People Assembly (SSPA), an organization dedicated to promoting the interests of the South-South region of Nigeria.

Dokpesi’s life faced challenges as well. He was arrested in 2010 for his alleged involvement in the Abuja car bombings but was subsequently released after nine hours in detention. He also faced legal charges related to a money laundering scam in 2015, which he denied. Despite these challenges, Dokpesi continued to make contributions to the media industry and Nigerian society.

In 2020, Dokpesi faced a personal health battle when he and members of his family were diagnosed with COVID-19. They received treatment at the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, and although Dokpesi and two of his grandchildren were discharged after recovering, his son Raymond Jr. and other family members continued to receive treatment at that time.
